The Crest
The coat-of-arms (crest) of Alpha Sigma Chi consists
primarily of a shield quartered. In the first quarter are the masks
of drama that represent cover and concealment; in the second quarter
is the bat and Northern Star that representing Surveillance, Reconnaissance,
and Signals Intelligence; in the third quarter is the crossed lightning
bolt, sword, and arrow over Gideon's Horn representing Indications
and Warning; in the fourth quarter is the All Seeing Eye of the
Republic representing Human Intelligence. The border of the shield
is purple, denoting nobility of purpose; the inner cross is gray,
representing the art of analysis. The intersection of the four quarters
converges on the inner sanctum where is pictured the Fraternity's
Greek letters, Alpha Sigma Chi, in the rays of fraternal Light.
The crest crowned by a helmet with the visor down, offering no clue
regarding the fraternity's inner countenance. Mantling surmounts
the shield, completing the crest beneath which is a scroll bearing
the motto of the Fraternity "Cryptos Aegis Republic" translated
phonetically into Greek.
The Shield
The shield of the fraternity is based on the upper
right quadrant of the crest; it features the Bat and Northern Star,
the name of the fraternity on top, and the Greek motto in English
on the bottom. The shield is less formal than the crest, and therefore
adorns the coaches' jacket, and is optional on, ball caps, and t-shirts.
Regalia
The official items of Alpha Sigma Chi regalia
are as follows:
Fraternal ring
Class ring. As of the fraternity's founding the class
ring is still under design. The ring will be a classic a college
ring, optionally available in either white or yellow gold, with
a garnet stone encrusted with the fraternity's Greek letters. For
the sake of uniformity and ease of recognition other types of fraternity
letter settings are not authorized; however, other birthstone selections
are optional. It should be noted that the traditional stone is a
garnet.
The ring will feature name of the member's university
on the bezel, for example: AMERICAN MILITARY UNIVERSITY. The date
on the ring will be the date of the member's crossing - no matter
what degrees are earned after crossing - the date will remain the
same. The ring will have the fraternity's Crest on the left side
with the crossing date, and an intelligence and national security
motif on the right side with the member's degree letters, for example:
Ph.D. MA, MD, etc. The ring will also feature the Latin motto of
the wearer's crossing, either inscribed inside the ring with block
letters, or, on the right motif side, as decided by all of the members
initiated during the year displayed on the crest (left) side.
While the regalia that follow are mandatory - the
ring is not - not everyone is comfortable either wearing a ring,
or, wearing a ring that denotes their affiliation with the international
society of intelligence and national security. However, wearing
of the fraternal ring is most strongly encouraged, ring cultures
pervade the military, and by extension the whole of the intelligence
and national security community of interest. Therefore, the establishment
and recognition of Alpha Sigma Chi within that tradition is highly
desirable, the more members who are wearing the fraternity ring
with pride, the more recognition the fraternity will enjoy in the
community of interest.
Mandatory Formal attire
Dress blazer: Color
black, with the fraternal crest centered on and in inch below the
vent of the left breast pocket.
Mandatory Casual attire
Coaches (Crossing) Jacket:
Color black, fraternal shield down the right side, fraternal letters
in gray with burgundy backing centered on the left breast (as worn).
Crossing date and Latin motto on right sleeve in burgundy and gray,
for example, SP03 (for Spring 2003) "EX VOTO" (crossing
motto is all gray letters).
Mandatory attire must be purchased within one
year of initiation.
Optional regalia
The regalia that follow are optional:
Varsity jacket: Like
the ring, the fraternity jacket is optional. This is because the
fraternity recognizes that most fraternal events will involve the
wearing of the blazer in recognition of the founding principals
of solidarity and professionalism. The varsity jacket therefore
recognizes and celebrates the founding principle of individuality.
In that spirit, the color combination of black, gray, and burgundy
may be configured to the individual member's desire. The traditional
configuration is as follows: Jacket body, black: Jacket sleeves,
burgundy leather (black optional): Snaps, burgundy and pocket trim,
black: Web trim, black, with burgundy and gray striping: Greek letters,
black with dark gray backing. The jacket must feature the fraternity
shield (Bat and Northern Star) centered on the right breast (as
worn). Fraternity letters down the left (heart) side of the jacket
are optional. The color of the fraternity letters is optional, however,
they must be of the traditional font, and be either burgundy, gray,
or black. Also like the fraternity ring, purchase and wearing of
the fraternity's varsity jacket is highly encouraged, and viewed
as a sign of solidarity and fraternal pride.
Sweater: A traditional
college sweater featuring the fraternity letters or crest may be
custom ordered from the licensed vendor of the fraternity jacket
in black or burgundy. The letters on the sweater must be of traditional
font, however, they may be burgundy, black or gray, with burgundy,
black, or gray backing.
T-shirts: T-shirts
can be configured as desired, but must employ the crest, shield,
or both. T-shirts can otherwise be of any color combination.
Ball caps: Ball caps
can feature the fraternal crest, letters, or shield, but not combinations
thereof. Ball caps may otherwise be of any one color.
Key: Alpha Sigma Chi
has no key, ASC is not a key club, is constitutionally not allied
with any sorority, and is not an honor society: keys are therefore
inappropriate.
Scarf, belt buckle, belt, sandals, flip-flops, etc.,
the wearing of such items with fraternal letters is not subject
to color restrictions.
Jewelry: The only
authorized jewelry is the fraternity class ring. Wearing of fraternity
letters on other items of jewelry is strictly unauthorized and highly
discouraged.
Licensed vendors: Vendors licensed to provide
official regalia change from time to time - contact the CEO
(Secretary) for current contact information.
